Panteón de los Próceres

The Panteón de los Próceres is a special place in Lima, Peru. Its name means Heroes' Pantheon in Spanish. It is like a sacred burial spot or crypt. Inside, you will find the remains of brave heroes. These heroes fought for Peru's independence. They helped Peru become a free country.

This building was once a church. It belonged to a group called the Jesuits. But the Jesuits had to leave Spanish lands. So, the church was given to others. A big earthquake hit Lima in 1746. It destroyed many buildings, including this church. The church was rebuilt after the earthquake.

In 1876, it became a chapel for the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. Then, in 1924, something important happened. The remains of many heroes from Peru's wars of independence were moved here. These wars happened between 1821 and 1824. The heroes' remains were placed in a crypt under the altar. After this, the church was renamed the "Panteón de los Próceres."

It is important not to confuse this Panteón with another one. There is also a "Panteón de los Próceres" at the Presbítero Maestro cemetery. That one holds the remains of heroes from the War of the Pacific in 1879. The Panteón we are talking about is for the heroes of Peru's independence.

Art and History: Murals

The Panteón has beautiful paintings on its walls. These paintings are called murals. A famous artist named José Sabogal created them. They help tell the story of Peru's history.
