A Look Back: Paquera's History
Long ago, during the time of the Spanish colonies, the entire Nicoya Peninsula was part of a region called the Partido de Nicoya. Today, this area is known as Guanacaste.
In the early 1900s, something changed. The president at the time, Alfredo González Flores, signed an official order. This order moved Paquera, along with two other towns, Lepanto and Cóbano, to the Puntarenas province. These towns are in the very south of the Nicoya Peninsula.
The main reason for this change was travel. Back then, it was much faster to reach Paquera by boat from Puntarenas. Land routes to Nicoya were very slow.
Today, some people in Guanacaste want the entire Nicoya Peninsula to be part of Guanacaste again. They say that the main highway, the Inter-American Highway, now makes it easy to travel by land to Guanacaste. They also argue that the name "Guanacaste" is well-known for tourism. They believe that more tourists would visit the southern beaches of the peninsula if they were part of Guanacaste.
