Paquita Madriguera (born September 15, 1900 – died November 2, 1965) was a talented pianist and composer from Catalonia, Spain. She spent most of her adult life living in Uruguay.
Early Life and Amazing Talent
Paquita Madriguera was born in a town called Igualada in Barcelona, Spain. Her parents were Enric Madriguera Haase and Francesca Rodon Canudas. Her younger brother, Enric Madriguera, also became a famous musician, a violinist and conductor.
Paquita was a true child prodigy on the piano. This means she showed incredible musical talent at a very young age. She studied music with the famous composer Enrique Granados when she was a girl.
When she was just 11 years old, Paquita gave a concert in Madrid, Spain. By the age of 13, she performed at the famous Royal Albert Hall in London, England. This shows how incredibly skilled she was even as a teenager!
Her Musical Career
Paquita Madriguera traveled to American cities for concerts in 1916 and 1917. People called her "The Mozart of Spain" because of her amazing talent. One reviewer in 1916 said she was "extremely talented" and had a "powerful touch." They believed she would become one of the top artists of the future.
In 1917, she played at a special concert in New York. This concert helped raise money for the National League for Women's Service. During her time in the United States, she also performed with her brother Enric in Chicago. She gave another piano recital in New York in 1919. Paquita even made special recordings called piano rolls in the 1910s. These rolls helped play music on player pianos.
Her promising career paused when she got married in 1922. She moved to Uruguay to live with her husband. After her husband passed away in 1931, she moved back to Spain in 1932. She brought her three young daughters with her and started her musical career again.
Later, she married another musician, Andres Segovia. They moved back to Uruguay in 1937. Paquita also wrote music. One of her compositions was called Humorada, written for the guitar.
Her Family Life
Paquita Madriguera married a lawyer and editor named Arturo Puig in 1922. They were married in Montevideo, Uruguay. They had three daughters together: Paquita (born 1923), Sofia (born 1925), and Maria Rosa (born 1927). Sadly, her first husband passed away in 1931.
In 1935, she married the famous Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia. They had one daughter named Beatriz (1938-1967). Paquita and Andres divorced in 1948.
Paquita Madriguera passed away in 1965. She was buried in Montevideo's Central Cemetery in Uruguay.
To honor her, there is a street named after her in her hometown of Igualada, Spain. It is called Carrer de Paquita Madriguera.
