How Paradise Casino Started
Building the Casino in Arizona
In 1993, the Quechan tribe made an agreement with the state of Arizona. This agreement allowed them to build a casino. The plan was to have 475 slot machines inside.
Building work for the casino began in January 1996. The casino first opened its doors to tribe members on July 31, 1996. The very next day, it opened to everyone else. The cost to build this casino was about $13 million.
Expanding to California
Later, in 1999, the tribe made another agreement. This time, it was with the state of California. This allowed them to open another casino building. It was built just seven feet away from the first one, but on the California side.
Having a casino in California was important. It meant they could offer games like blackjack. At that time, Arizona's rules did not allow blackjack in casinos. The new California building also helped make the existing casino less crowded.
Construction for the California casino started in February 2002. It opened on December 20, 2002. This new part had 20 blackjack tables and 200 slot machines. For a while, both buildings were called Paradise Casino Arizona and Paradise Casino California. They worked together.
Changes and New Venues
In 2009, the Paradise Casino California building closed down. The tribe decided to move their California gaming operations. They opened a brand new place called Quechan Casino Resort. This new resort was about seven miles to the west.
The new resort was expected to attract many tourists. This meant Paradise Casino Arizona would mostly serve local people. The old Paradise Casino California building was then changed. It became a large event space called the Paradise Event Center. It can hold 800 people. The first event there was a concert by the band Lonestar in June 2009.
Paradise Casino also had a big update in 2011. This renovation made the casino look newer and better.
