The Dawson's King Crab (Paralomis dawsoni) is a really cool type of king crab that lives deep in the ocean! You can find this amazing creature in the waters around New Caledonia, New Zealand, and the Solomon Islands. It makes its home at incredible depths, usually between 400 and 1,118 meters (that's like diving more than a kilometer down!). This particular crab is special because it's the biggest Paralomis species found in New Zealand.

What's in a Name?

The scientific name "dawsoni" was given to this crab to honor a very important person. It is dedicated to Elliot Watson Dawson, who worked at the National Museum of New Zealand. Scientists often name new species after people who have helped with research or exploration.
