Welcome to the Pardee Home!

The Pardee Home is more than just an old house. It is a window into the past. When you visit, you can see how people lived long ago. The house helps us understand California's history. It is a place where stories come alive.

A Family's Story: The Pardees

The Pardee Home was built in 1868. It was built for Enoch H. Pardee. He was a California State Senator. A state senator helps make laws for the state.

His son, George Pardee, later lived in the house. George Pardee became the Governor of California. A governor is the leader of a state. He is like the president of that state. George inherited the house after his father passed away.

After George died in 1941, his two daughters, Madeline and Helen, lived there. They stayed in the house until their deaths. Madeline passed away in 1980. Helen passed away in 1981.

Step Inside: The Museum's Treasures

The inside of the Pardee Home is the most exciting part of the museum. George's wife, Helen, loved to collect things. She gathered many unique items from all over the world.

You can see scrimshaw from Alaska. Scrimshaw is art carved into whalebone or ivory. There are also tobacco pipes from the Philippines. A giant elk head is another interesting piece. Helen enjoyed giving tours of her home. She loved showing off her amazing collection.

All the furniture and decorations in the house are original. This means they belonged to the Pardee family. The house looks exactly as it did in 1981. It is like stepping back in time!

Saving a Piece of History

The original building for carriages and horses is still there. This is called the carriage house and stable. The entire property is part of Oakland's Preservation Park Historic District.

The Pardee Home was almost torn down. This was for building a new highway called Interstate 980. But people who wanted to save old buildings worked hard. They were able to protect the house. It was saved from being destroyed. The house opened as a public museum in 1991.
