Park Bo-gum (Hangul: 박보검; born June 16, 1993) is a popular South Korean actor. He is known for playing many different kinds of characters in movies and TV shows. Some of his famous roles include a smart Go player in Reply 1988 (2015–2016) and a Joseon crown prince in Love in the Moonlight (2016). He also starred in the TV series Encounter (2018) and Record of Youth (2020).
Park Bo-gum was the youngest actor to be named Gallup Korea's Actor of the Year. He was also the first actor to reach the top of the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity 40 list.

Early Life and Education
Park Bo-gum was born in Seoul, South Korea, on June 16, 1993. He is the youngest of three children. His name, "Bo-gum" (寶劍), means 'precious sword'.
Park started playing the piano when he was very young, in kindergarten. He was a pianist and sang in the choir at his church. He was also a strong swimmer and part of the varsity swimming team at Seoul Mokdong Middle School.
When he was in high school, Park sent a video of himself singing and playing the piano to several talent agencies. He originally wanted to be a singer-songwriter. However, after getting advice that he would be good at acting, he decided to become an actor instead. He finished Shinmok High School in 2012.
In March 2014, Park started studying Musical Theater at Myongji University. Even with his busy acting career, he stayed active in university life. He even traveled to Europe as part of his university's cultural exchange program. Park also directed a short play and was the music director for his graduating class's show, Hairspray. He earned his college degree in February 2018.
Acting Career Highlights
Starting Out (2011–2013)
Park Bo-gum began his acting career in 2011 with a small role in the movie Blind. He then joined a new agency, Blossom Entertainment. He appeared in the action-comedy film Runway Cop (2012) and the TV drama Bridal Mask (2012).
Becoming Popular (2014–2015)
In 2014, Park played a young cellist in the TV show Naeil's Cantabile. This role helped him get nominated for Best New Actor awards. He also appeared in successful movies like A Hard Day (2014) and The Admiral: Roaring Currents (2014). The Admiral became the highest-grossing Korean film at that time.
In May 2015, Park became a co-host for the music show Music Bank. He hosted the show with Irene from the group Red Velvet. They were very popular together and Park won the Best Newcomer Award at the KBS Entertainment Awards.
Park also impressed critics with his role in the crime drama Hello Monster (2015). This role was very different from his usual image. He won Popularity and Best Supporting Actor awards for it. He also starred in the movie Coin Locker Girl, which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival.
Later in 2015, Park played the genius Go player Choi Taek in Reply 1988. This show was a huge hit, with very high audience ratings. It made Park very famous in Korea and earned him the nickname "Nation's Little Brother". He also started gaining fame internationally, winning awards like Best International Artist and Best Rising Star.
Mainstream Success (2016–2021)
In February 2016, Park appeared in the travel show Youth Over Flowers: Africa. He left Music Bank in June 2016 after hosting for over a year.
In August 2016, Park starred in the historical drama Love in the Moonlight with Kim Yoo-jung. This show was a big success both in Korea and overseas. Its popularity was even called "Moonlight Syndrome." This show proved Park could play a wide range of characters. He won many awards for his role, including the Top Excellence Award at the KBS Drama Awards. Park also sang a song for the show's soundtrack called "My Person," which became very popular.
After this, he went on his first fan meeting tour across Asia, meeting over 30,000 fans in eight cities.
After a break, he returned to TV in 2018 with the romantic drama Encounter, starring alongside Song Hye-kyo. In this show, he played a carefree young man who enjoys simple things in life.
In 2019, Park released his first Japanese song, "Bloomin." He then released his first Japanese album, Blue Bird, in March 2020. That same year, he starred in the drama Record of Youth, playing a model who wants to become an actor. He also released a new song called All My Love to celebrate his 9th anniversary as an actor.
In 2021, Park starred in the science fiction thriller film Seo Bok, his first movie in six years.
Return from Military Service (2022–Present)
In September 2022, Park reunited with the director and cast of Love in the Moonlight for a travel show called Young Actors' Retreat. In December 2022, he left Blossom Entertainment after being with them for ten years.
In January 2023, Park signed with a new agency, The Black Label. He is set to star in an upcoming TV series called When Life Gives You Tangerines, which will be released on Netflix in March 2025.
Personal Life
Military Service
On August 31, 2020, Park Bo-gum began his required military service in the navy military band. He served as a cultural promotion soldier. He was promoted to sergeant in November 2021. Park was officially discharged from military service on February 21, 2022, earlier than planned, due to special rules for preventing the spread of COVID-19.
During his time in the military, Park also earned a license to be a hairdresser.
