The Parkerville Tavern is a famous old building in Parkerville. This town is a hilly suburb located near Perth, Western Australia. The tavern first opened its doors in 1902.

When it first started, it was known as The Railway Hotel. Later, its name changed to The Parkerville Hotel. Finally, in the 1970s, it became The Parkerville Tavern, which is what it's called today.

A Look Back: The Tavern's History

How It All Began

In 1902, a woman named Alice Ottey, who was a widow, got a special permit. This permit allowed her to sell wine and beer from her home. Her house then became known as The Railway Hotel.

At that time, many people lived in the surrounding bushland. There was also a lot of activity from local sawmills, a gravel quarry, and fruit farms. Because of all this, the hotel quickly became very popular and busy.

Alice later married Charles Hebb. She then rented out the hotel to different people, including W. W. Bramwell and W.H. Angove. Mr. Angove made many improvements to the building. He also got a full public house licence, which meant he could sell more types of drinks. He changed the name of the place to The Parkerville Hotel.

Changes Over the Years

The Parkerville Tavern closed for a short time in 1921. It then reopened in 1928. Since then, many different people have owned the tavern. Some of these owners include Robert Congdon, Eileen Smith, Bill Harrison, and Ian O’Connor.

The tavern has always been a central meeting spot for the Parkerville community. People have gathered there for celebrations, dancing, and even motorcycle events. It's also been a place for wood chopping competitions and relaxing Sunday sessions. In 1990, the tavern survived a fire. After the fire, it had more restoration work done to fix it up.

Interesting Facts

The sign board for The Parkerville Tavern features a picture of Sir Stephen Henry Parker. The town of Parkerville was actually named after him!

Right behind the tavern, there is a large park that is about 5 acres in size. This park is called The Alice Hebb Reserve. It is named after Alice Ottey, who was the first owner of the tavern.

What the Tavern Looks Like

The Parkerville Tavern is a two-storey building made of brick. It sits very close to the road. From the tavern, you can look out over the Jane Brook and the Railway Reserve Heritage Trail.

Architectural Style

The building has large verandas and railings on both floors. These verandas cover most of the south and west sides of the building. This design makes the tavern stand out in its surroundings.

The timber details on the verandas include arched beams underneath. The roof has large gables that stick out over the front veranda. Parts of the chimney have a rough plaster finish mixed with brickwork. This style is from a later period called 'Bungalow' style.

However, other parts of the building show its original 'Federation' style. These include:

  • Bands of plasterwork on the brick.
  • Plastered window sills and top frames.
  • Double-hung timber windows.
  • Some windows have a Georgian style with small panes in the top section.
  • A few pieces of original stained glass can still be seen.

Why the Tavern is Special

The Parkerville Tavern is very important for its beauty and design. It is a landmark building in the area. It also has high social importance because it has always been a key gathering place for the community.

In 2016, The Parkerville Tavern was added to Western Australia’s Heritage Register. This means it is officially recognized for its contribution to Western Australia’s history and culture.
