Parliament of Kazakhstan facts for kids
The Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Kazakh: Қазақстан Республикасының Парламенті, romanized: Qazaqstan Respýblıkasynyń Parlamenti; Russian: Парламент Республики Казахстан, tr. Parliament Respubliki Kazakhstan) is like the main law-making body for the country of Kazakhstan. It's a special group of people who are chosen to represent everyone in the country. Their most important job is to create and approve laws that help Kazakhstan run smoothly and fairly.
What is a Parliament?
A parliament is a group of elected people who make laws for a country. Think of it as a big team that decides the rules everyone follows. In Kazakhstan, the Parliament is "bicameral," which means it has two main parts, or "houses." This helps make sure that laws are carefully thought out before they are passed.
Two Houses: Mazhilis and Senate
Kazakhstan's Parliament has two houses:
- The Mazhilis is the lower house. It has 107 members who are elected by the people for four-year terms.
- The Senate is the upper house. It has 47 members.
Having two houses means that new laws are discussed and voted on by two different groups. This makes the law-making process more thorough.
Who Represents the People?
In January 2007, about 10% of the people in the Parliament were women. Also, about 19% of the officials in local and city councils were women. This shows that more women are becoming involved in making decisions for their communities and the country.
