A view of the Parrsboro shore showing Spencers Island

The Parrsboro Shore is a special coastal area in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. It includes many small towns and villages located along the shoreline, west of the main town of Parrsboro. This beautiful stretch of land is known for its amazing views of the Bay of Fundy.

Exploring the Parrsboro Shore

The Parrsboro Shore stretches along the Bay of Fundy. It goes from the town of Parrsboro all the way west. It wraps around Cape Chignecto and reaches as far as Apple River.

Communities Along the Shore

Many small communities make up the Parrsboro Shore. These include places like Diligent River, Fox River, and Port Greville. You can also find Ward's Brook, Fraserville, and Spencer's Island. Further along are Advocate and even the old "ghost town" of Eatonville.

All these communities are connected by a road called Nova Scotia Route 209. This road is part of a bigger trip called the Fundy Shore Ecotour. An ecotour is a journey focused on seeing nature and learning about the environment.

Why is it Called the Parrsboro Shore?

The area gets its name because these smaller communities are like a "hinterland" for the town of Parrsboro. A hinterland is an area that supports a main town. It provides resources or services to that central place. In this case, the smaller towns are connected to Parrsboro.

A Rich History of the Parrsboro Shore

The Parrsboro Shore has a very interesting past. Long ago, it was a busy place for two main industries: lumbering and shipbuilding.

Lumbering and Shipbuilding

People used to cut down trees (lumbering) in the forests nearby. This wood was then used to build ships right on the shore. The area was so important for shipbuilding that it produced about 400 vessels! These ships would have sailed all over the world.

Preserving the Past

You can learn more about this history today. The Age of Sail Heritage Centre in Port Greville tells the story of the ships and the people who built them. Also, the Parrsboro Shore Historical Society at Ottawa House in Parrsboro helps keep the local history alive. They collect and share stories and items from the past.
