Location in Nova Scotia

This cape is found at the very western edge of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. It marks the end of the Cobequid Mountains, which are a low mountain range. These mountains are part of the much larger Appalachian Mountains that stretch across eastern North America.

What is Cape Chignecto?

Cape Chignecto is a headland. This means it's a high piece of land that reaches out into the sea. It's known for having some of the tallest cliffs in Nova Scotia. These cliffs were formed by a powerful natural event called the Cobequid fault, which pushed the land upwards a long, long time ago.

Splitting the Bay of Fundy

The cape acts like a natural divider for the Bay of Fundy. To its north, you'll find Chignecto Bay. To its east, there's the Minas Channel, which leads into the Minas Basin. It's pretty cool how one piece of land can separate such large bodies of water!

A Wild and Beautiful Park

Since 1998, Cape Chignecto has been part of the Cape Chignecto Provincial Park. This is the biggest provincial park in Nova Scotia! It's a famous place for wilderness and nature. People who love hiking and exploring wild places really enjoy visiting here.

Life at the Cape

Most of Cape Chignecto is not lived on by people. It includes two "ghost towns" called Eatonville and New Yarmouth. A ghost town is a place where people used to live, but now it's empty. The closest village where people still live is Advocate, Nova Scotia.

The Name's Meaning

The name "Chignecto" comes from the Mi'kmaw word Siknikt. This word means "drainage place." It's also the name of the Mi'kmaq District where the cape is located. The Mi'kmaq are the Indigenous people of this area.
