Parun (Dari: پارون) is a small town in Afghanistan. It is the main administrative center for Nuristan Province and its Parun District.

Parun has a population of about 1,647 people. It covers a land area of 350 hectares, which is about 1.35 square miles. There are 183 homes in Parun. On August 15, 2021, Parun was taken over by Taliban fighters. It was one of many provincial capitals they captured that year.

Land Use in Parun

Land use describes how land is used by people. Parun is a village in northeastern Afghanistan. Most of its land is covered by forests. About 54% of the land is forest.

Another large part of Parun's land is used for farming. About 33% of the land is agricultural. Only a small amount, 7%, is built-up land with buildings and roads. Unlike many other towns, Parun has almost no empty or unused land.

Geography of Parun

Parun is made up of six smaller villages. These villages are Ishtewi, Pronz, Dewa, Kushteki, Tsutsum, and Pashki. They stretch out over 20 kilometers (about 12 miles). They are located along the Parun River.

The villages are at different heights above sea level. Ishtewi is the highest village, at 2,850 meters (9,350 feet). Pashki is the lowest village, at 2,500 meters (8,200 feet).

Parun has a type of cold climate called a subarctic climate. This means it has long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The average temperature for the whole year in Parun is about 1.2 degrees Celsius (34.2 degrees Fahrenheit).

Plans for a New City

In 2007, there were plans to build a larger city in Parun. The governor of Nuristan Province wanted to create a city for about 20,000 people. This would have been the first city in Nuristan. Reports from that time said that some building work had already started.

Languages Spoken in Parun

The main language spoken by people in Parun is Wasi-wari. Other languages are also understood there, like Kamkata-vari, Pashto, and Dari. Some people in Parun are called Gurjars, and they speak their own language called Gujari.
