Nuristan (which means "Land of Light" in Persian) is a special region in Afghanistan. It's also sometimes spelled Nurestan or Nooristan. This area is located in the southern part of the amazing Hindu Kush mountain range. Think of it like a state or province within Afghanistan. The main city and capital of Nuristan is called Paroon.
Nuristan is known for its beautiful, rugged mountains and deep valleys. It's a place with a unique history and culture, different from many other parts of Afghanistan.

Exploring Nuristan's Districts
Nuristan Province is divided into several smaller areas called districts. Each district helps manage the local communities and services. These districts include:
- Bargi Matal
- Du Ab
- Kamdesh
- Mandol
- Nurgram
- Parun
- Wama
- Waygal
Some of these districts were created or changed around 2004 to help organize the province better. For example, Du Ab District was formed from parts of other districts like Nuristan and Mangol.

To the north of Nuristan is Badakhshan Province. If you look to the northeast, you'll find Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which is a part of Pakistan. To the southeast, it borders Kunar Province. On its southwest side, you'll find Laghman Province, and to the west is Panjshir Province.
People and Languages of Nuristan
The people of Nuristan are known as Nuristanis. They have their own special languages, called Nuristani languages, which are different from the main languages spoken in other parts of Afghanistan. However, Pashto is also widely spoken here.
The leader of Nuristan Province is called the Governor. The current Governor is Jamaluddin Badar. The population of Nuristan is about 112,000 people.
