Pat Hingle (born July 19, 1924, died January 3, 2009) was an American actor. He was famous for playing Commissioner James Gordon in the Batman movies. These included Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin. Pat Hingle and Michael Gough were the only two actors who appeared in all four of these Batman films. He acted in movies and TV shows from 1954 to 2006.

Pat Hingle's Life
Pat Hingle was born in Miami, Florida, on July 19, 1924. His mother, Marvin Louise, was a schoolteacher and musician. His father, Clarence Martin Hingle, worked as a building contractor.
Early Life and Career
In December 1941, Pat Hingle joined the U.S. Navy. He left the University of Texas to serve during World War II. He was on a destroyer ship called the USS Marshall. After the war, he went back to the University of Texas. He earned a degree in radio broadcasting. Later, he learned how to act at the Actors Studio.
His Family Life
Pat Hingle was married two times. His first marriage was to Alyce Faye Dorsey in 1947. They divorced in 1972. He then married Julie Wright in 1979. They stayed married until he passed away in 2009. Pat Hingle had three children with Alyce: Jody, Billy, and Molly. He had two more children with Julie.
A Difficult Accident
In 1960, Pat Hingle was offered a main role in a movie called Elmer Gantry. However, he had a very serious accident. He was in an elevator that stopped between floors in his apartment building. He tried to get out but fell 54 feet down the elevator shaft. He broke his skull, wrist, hip, and many ribs. He also broke his left leg in three places and lost a finger. He was very close to death for two weeks. It took him more than a year to recover from his injuries. Because of this, another actor, Burt Lancaster, took the role in Elmer Gantry.
His Later Years
Pat Hingle died on January 3, 2009, in Carolina Beach, North Carolina. He was 84 years old. He passed away from a blood disorder called Myelodysplastic syndrome. After his death, his body was cremated. His ashes were then scattered into the Atlantic Ocean.
