Patrick O'Neal Howell (born August 31, 1968) is a former professional baseball player. He played for the New York Mets in Major League Baseball in 1992. Pat was mainly a center fielder, which means he played in the middle of the outfield. He also played baseball in Taiwan for one season in 1998.

Pat Howell was known for his amazing speed. He was very fast and could steal many bases when he was playing in the minor leagues. He was also a fantastic defender in the outfield, making great plays wherever he played.

Pat Howell was born in Mobile, Alabama. He went to Vigor High School in Prichard, Alabama.

Playing for the New York Mets

The New York Mets chose Pat Howell in the 1987 amateur draft. This means they picked him to join their team from a group of young players. He spent five years playing in their minor league baseball system. Minor leagues are like training teams for players before they reach the major leagues.

Pat made his big debut in Major League Baseball in 1992. In his very first time at bat, he got a hit! He played in 31 games that season. He had a batting average of .187. He did not hit any home runs but he did get 1 run batted in.

Beyond the Major Leagues

After the 1992 season, Pat was traded to the Minnesota Twins. A trade means one team sends a player to another team. He played one season in their farm system, which is another name for minor league teams.

Later, he became a free agent. This means he could choose which team he wanted to play for. He decided to sign with the Mets again. After playing one more season with the Mets' minor league teams, he went to play in the Mexican League from 1995 to 1997.

In 1998, Pat traveled to Taiwan to play for a team called the Brother Elephants. He played 24 games there and had a batting average of .264.

He came back to the United States in 1999. He played for the Duluth–Superior Dukes and then for the Nashua Pride. He played with the Nashua Pride for four seasons. In 2004, he got a knee injury. He tried to play again the next year, but he didn't play professionally after that.

During his time in the minor leagues, Pat Howell played in 1133 games. He had a batting average of .249. He hit 20 home runs and had 290 runs batted in.
