Patrick McCartan's Early Life and Career
Patrick McCartan studied at University College Dublin. After finishing his studies, he became a solicitor. A solicitor is a type of lawyer who helps people with legal problems. He worked in criminal defence, which means he helped people accused of crimes. He also helped start a law firm called McCartan & Hogan Solicitors.
Becoming a Politician
Patrick McCartan tried to get elected to public office several times. His first attempts in 1981 and 1982 were not successful.
Serving on Dublin City Council
In 1985, he was elected to the Dublin City Council. This council helps manage the city of Dublin. He represented the Artane area for two years.
Becoming a Teachta Dála (TD)
In 1987, Patrick McCartan was elected to Dáil Éireann. This is the main parliament of Ireland. He became a Teachta Dála (TD), which is like a Member of Parliament. He represented the Dublin North-East area. He was part of the Workers' Party. He was re-elected as a TD in 1989.
