History of Patoka
Patoka was first planned and mapped out in 1813. The town's name comes from an old Native American word. It means "log on bottom," which refers to the many muddy logs found at the bottom of the river nearby. The Patoka post office, where people send and receive mail, was started in 1833.

Before 1963, students in Patoka attended Patoka High School. That year, Patoka High School joined with White River High School. White River High School's colors were red, white, and blue, and their mascot was the Little Giants. Then, in 1965, White River High School also merged with Princeton Community High School. This was part of a trend in the 1960s where many school districts in Indiana combined to form larger schools.
