Patricia Collinge (born September 20, 1892 – died April 10, 1974) was a talented actress and writer from Ireland and America. She was famous for her many roles on stage. She also appeared in well-known movies like The Little Foxes (1941) and Shadow of a Doubt (1943). Patricia Collinge was even nominated for an Academy Award for her work in The Little Foxes.

Early Life and Dreams
Patricia Collinge was born in Dublin, Ireland. Her parents were F. Channon Collinge and Emmie Collinge. She was taught at home by a governess and later went to a girls' school. Even though she took dance and piano lessons, she really wanted to be an actress.
Stage Performances
Patricia Collinge first acted on stage in London in 1904. The play was called Little Black Sambo and Little White Barbara. In 1907, she moved to the United States with her mother. Soon after, she appeared in plays like The Queens of the Moulin Rouge (1908).
In 1911, Collinge played a character called Youth in a Broadway play named Everywoman. Broadway is a famous theater district in New York City. She also acted with famous actors like Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. in plays such as The New Henrietta (1913).
Collinge became the first actress to play Pollyanna Whittier in the stage version of Pollyanna. Critics praised her acting, saying she was one of the most "endearing actresses."
In 1939, she was part of the first Broadway cast of The Little Foxes. She played the sad character Birdie Hubbard. She later played this same role in the movie version. Her last stage show was in December 1952.

Besides acting, Patricia Collinge was also a writer. She wrote a play called Dame Nature (1938). She also wrote short stories for The New Yorker magazine. She even wrote for The New York Times Book Review.
One of her books was The Small Mosaics of Mr. and Mrs. Engel. This was a travel book that won her a special award from the Italian government. She also co-wrote a book called The B.O.W.S. with Margalo Gillmore.
Personal Life
Patricia Collinge was married to James Nichols Smith from 1921 until she passed away in 1974. They did not have any children.
She died on April 10, 1974, in New York City, at the age of 81. She is buried with her husband in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
