Patricia Josephine Ferguson, born on September 24, 1958, is a politician from Britain. She has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Glasgow West since 2024. Before becoming an MP, she was a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn from 1999 to 2016. Patricia Ferguson is part of the Labour Party.
She also served in the Scottish Government's top team, called the Scottish Cabinet, from 2001 to 2007. Before becoming an MP, she was a Councillor for Glasgow City Council. She stopped being a Councillor on September 2, 2024. Currently, she leads the Scottish Affairs Select Committee in the House of Commons.

Early Life and Education
Patricia Ferguson grew up in Glasgow, Scotland. She went to Garnethill Convent Secondary School from 1970 to 1976. After that, she studied at Glasgow College of Technology. In 1978, she earned a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Public Administration. Part of her childhood was spent living in the city's Red Road Flats.
Before Politics
Before she became a politician, Patricia worked in different roles. From 1978 to 1990, she was an administrator for NHS Scotland, which is the health service in Scotland. She then worked with the Scottish Trades Union Congress from 1990 to 1994. From 1994 until 1999, she worked for the Scottish Labour Party.
Serving in the Scottish Parliament (1999–2016)
Patricia Ferguson was first chosen as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) in 1999. She represented the new area called Glasgow Maryhill. She kept this seat until 2011.
Changes to Her Constituency
In 2011, the Glasgow Maryhill area joined with other areas. This created a new area called Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn. Patricia won the election for this new area in 2011. However, in 2016, she lost her seat to Bob Doris, who is a member of the Scottish National Party (SNP).
Important Roles in Scotland
After being elected as an MSP in May 1999, she took on important roles. From 1999 to 2001, she was the Deputy Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament. This role is like a vice-chairperson for the Parliament. She was also part of several committees that looked at rules and standards in the Parliament.
In November 2001, she joined the Scottish Government's team, called the Scottish Executive Cabinet. She became the Minister for Parliament when Jack McConnell became the First Minister. Later, in October 2004, she became the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport.
Local Government Work (2022–2024)
In 2022, Patricia Ferguson was elected to the Glasgow City Council. She was one of four people chosen to represent the Drumchapel/Anniesland area. She served as a Councillor until she resigned on September 2, 2024.
Serving in the UK Parliament (2024–Present)
Patricia Ferguson was elected to the United Kingdom Parliament in the 2024 general election. She won against Carol Monaghan, who was the previous MP for the area. Before this, in 2019, Patricia was the second-place candidate in the Glasgow North West area.
On September 12, 2024, she was chosen to lead the Scottish Affairs Select Committee. This committee looks into matters related to Scotland in the UK Parliament.

Patricia Ferguson is married to Bill Butler. He was also a Labour politician, serving as an MSP and a Councillor.
