Early Life and Education

Patricia Mejía Contreras was born in Uruapan, a city in Michoacán, Mexico. She first discovered her love for art at a local school there.

Later, in 1977, she moved to Mexico City to study art. She joined the famous Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda". From 1982 to 1983, she also studied at the Taller de Fundición Artística. This workshop was part of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBA).

Patricia Mejía passed away in Mexico City when she was 48 years old.

Artistic Career Highlights

Patricia Mejía started her career in Mexico City. She worked as an illustrator for the cultural section of the newspaper El Nacional. She also helped with illustrations for the newspaper El Universal.

She also worked on restoring old artworks. She helped the Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público and the INBA's art conservation center. She worked on collections from the Museo Nacional de la Estampa and the Taller de Gráfica Popular. She also restored works by artists like Manuel Manilla, José Guadalupe Posada, and Pablo O'Higgins.

Exhibitions and Workshops

Throughout her career, Patricia Mejía showed her art in many group exhibitions. She also had six solo shows where only her work was displayed. Her last solo show was called Atrás la obscuridad sigo el vuelo del Ave Fénix. This show was held at the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana. She became a member of this important art group in 2000.

In 2001, she started her own sculpting workshop. It was called La Nave de los Desarraigados. In this workshop, she created sculptures using different materials. These included bronze, aluminum, marble, basalt, sandstone, and wood.

Artistic Style and Inspiration

Patricia Mejía's art often focused on the human body. She was inspired by famous artists like Michelangelo, Raphael, and Caravaggio. These artists were known for their classic styles.

However, Patricia Mejía gave their classic ideas a new twist. Her art had a strong Expressionistic feel. This means her work showed strong emotions. The faces in her sculptures often showed raw, powerful feelings. The way hands were placed also helped show what a person was feeling or doing. She often captured a single, important moment in a scene.
