John Patrick Douglas Balfour, also known as the 3rd Baron Kinross, was a Scottish historian and writer. He was born on June 25, 1904, and passed away on June 4, 1976. He is best known for his biography of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who was the founder of modern Turkey. He also wrote many other books about the history of the Islamic world.

Early Life and Education
John Patrick Douglas Balfour was born into a Scottish family. His father was Patrick Balfour, the 2nd Baron Kinross. His mother was Caroline Elsie Johnstone-Douglas.
His grandfather on his father's side was John Balfour, the 1st Baron Kinross. He was a very important judge in Scotland. His mother's family also had connections to noble families.
Patrick went to school at Winchester College. After that, he studied at Balliol College, Oxford University. While at Oxford, he was part of a group called the Railway Club. After finishing his studies, he became a journalist and a writer.
Career as a Historian
Lord Kinross became a well-known historian. He was especially famous for his books about the history of the Islamic world. His most famous work is a biography of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. This book tells the story of how Atatürk created the modern country of Turkey.
During World War II, Lord Kinross served in the Royal Air Force. After the war, from 1944 to 1947, he worked as a diplomat. He was the First Secretary at the British Embassy in Cairo, Egypt. This job involved representing Britain in another country.
Personal Life and Family
In 1938, Patrick Balfour married Angela Mary Culme-Seymour. They were married for a few years and then divorced in 1942.
Lord Kinross did not have any children. When he passed away, his noble title was passed on to his brother, David Andrew Balfour.
He is buried in Dean Cemetery in Edinburgh, Scotland. He rests there with his ancestors who also held the title of Baron Kinross.
