Patrick Balfour, 2nd Baron Kinross, was an important Scottish figure. He was born on April 23, 1870, and passed away on July 28, 1939. He held the title of Baron Kinross and worked as a lawyer, known as an advocate. He was also a King's Counsel, which is a special title for experienced lawyers.
Early Life and Education
Patrick Balfour was the oldest son of John Balfour, 1st Baron Kinross and Lilias Oswald Mackenzie. After his mother passed away, his father married Marianne Eliza Moncrieff. Patrick had several younger half-siblings from his father's second marriage.
His grandparents on his mother's side were Donald Mackenzie, a judge, and Janet Alice Mitchell. His grandparents on his father's side were Rev. Peter Balfour and Jane Ramsay Blair.
Patrick went to Harrow School, a famous school in England. After that, he studied at Balliol College, Oxford University, where he finished his studies in 1894.
His Career and Titles
Patrick Balfour became a practicing lawyer in 1897. Later, he was given the special title of King's Counsel. He also worked as an Advocate-Depute from 1927 to 1937, helping the government with legal matters.
He was also a director for the Scottish Widows' Fund and Life Assurance Society and the Bank of Scotland. These were important roles in the business world.
When his father died in 1905, Patrick inherited the title of Baron Kinross. This meant he became the 2nd Baron Kinross. He also became a Brigadier in the Royal Company of Archers, a ceremonial guard in Scotland. From 1927 until his death in 1939, he served as the Sheriff of Dumfries and Galloway, which is a senior legal position.
Family Life
On August 18, 1903, Patrick Balfour married Caroline Elsie Johnstone-Douglas. She was the sixth daughter of Arthur Johnstone-Douglas. Together, Patrick and Caroline had five children: two sons and three daughters.

Patrick Balfour, the 2nd Baron Kinross, passed away on July 28, 1939. His oldest son, Patrick, then became the 3rd Baron Kinross. His wife, Lady Kinross, lived until 1969.
His Grandchildren
Through his son David, Patrick Balfour was the grandfather of Christopher Patrick Balfour, who became the 5th Baron Kinross.
