His Important Work
Before working for the United States Department of Defense (which helps protect the country), Patrick Carrick was a physics professor at Mississippi State University. He also directed a special laser lab at the University of Oregon.
In 1989, he started doing research on rocket engines at Edwards Air Force Base. Later, in 2004, he moved to The Pentagon, which is the main building for the Department of Defense.
Leading Science for the Air Force
In 2007, he became the Director of Physics and Electronics for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. This office helps find new science ideas for the Air Force.
Helping Homeland Security
In 2014, Patrick Carrick joined the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). DHS works to keep the country safe from threats. He became a deputy director for the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency (HSARPA). This agency helps develop new technologies to protect the homeland.
He became the Director of HSARPA in 2015. In 2016, he also started working as the Acting Chief Scientist for the DHS Science and Technology Directorate. This group finds and uses new science and technology to solve problems. In November 2017, he officially became the Chief Scientist for this important directorate at DHS.
