Sir Patrick Hehir (born May 17, 1859 – died May 1, 1937) was a very important British military doctor. He worked for the Indian Medical Service (IMS), which was like a health service for the army in India. He was also the main doctor for the army of the Nizam of Hyderabad, a powerful ruler in India. During a long battle called the Siege of Kut, he experienced tough times with the soldiers. He wrote a lot about how people suffered from not having enough food during this time.

Sir Patrick Hehir was born in Ireland on May 17, 1859. His family lived in a place called Ennis in County Clare.
Becoming a Doctor
He studied at many different universities to become a doctor. He went to Calcutta University in India and also studied in Brussels. He earned special medical degrees from the University of Edinburgh and a public health diploma from the University of Cambridge. He also got a diploma in tropical medicine from the University of Liverpool. This showed he was very dedicated to his studies.
In 1893, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a special honor given to top scientists and thinkers.
Military Service and Wars
Sir Patrick Hehir served as a doctor in many military campaigns. He received many awards for his brave service. During the First World War, he was the main medical officer in a region called Mesopotamia.
He was present at the Battle of Ctesiphon and the very difficult Siege of Kut. During the Siege of Kut, his army was surrounded by enemy forces for 148 days. He was captured when his army surrendered in April 1916. However, he was released later that year in September.
After this, he continued his service in other areas. He worked in Waziristan in 1917 and later in Afghanistan in 1919. He retired from the army on December 9, 1919.
Sir Patrick Hehir passed away on May 1, 1937.
