Patrick Lyon's Story
Becoming an Earl
Patrick became the 3rd Earl of Kinghorne and 11th Lord Glamis when he was very young. This happened on May 12, 1646, just before his third birthday. He inherited these important titles from his father.
Along with the titles, he also received two grand homes: Glamis Castle and Castle Lyon. Castle Lyon is known today as Castle Huntly. The first Earl of Kinghorne had bought Castle Lyon in 1614.
New Titles and Honors
As he grew older, Patrick received even more honors. On May 30, 1672, he was given a new official document, called a charter. This charter was approved by the Scottish Parliament on July 1, 1677.
This new charter added to his main title. From then on, he was known as the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. He also gained other titles like Viscount Lyon and Lord Glammis. These new titles kept the same high importance as his earlier title of Earl of Kinghorne.
