Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Patrick Maule (born 1585, died 1661) was an important Scottish nobleman and a trusted helper at the royal court. He was known as the 1st Earl of Panmure. His father was also named Patrick Maule, and his mother was Margaret Erskine.

A Life at Court

Patrick Maule started his career as a page for James VI and I, who was the King of Scotland and later also King of England. A page was like a young assistant to the king. In 1603, when King James became King of both Scotland and England (this was called the Union of Crowns), Patrick Maule went with the royal court to London. Later, he became a "Gentleman of the Bedchamber." This was a special and trusted role, meaning he was close to the king and helped him with personal matters.

Important Titles and Lands

Patrick Maule received many important titles and lands during his life. In 1610, he was given the Barony of Panmure. This meant he owned a large area of land and had special rights there. He also received lands in Northamptonshire, England, including Collyweston in 1625. In 1632, he was made the Sheriff Principal of Forfarshire in Scotland, which was an important legal and administrative job.

Supporting the King

Patrick Maule was a strong supporter of King Charles I. He was known as a Royalist, meaning he was loyal to the king during a time of conflict. He fought for King Charles I at York in 1642. Later, in 1646, he became a Colonel in the Scottish Army at Oxford. Because of his loyalty and service, King Charles I made him the Earl of Panmure and Lord Maule of Brechin and Navar. Patrick Maule passed away in 1661 and was buried at Panbride in Angus, Scotland.
