Patrick Munro, also known as Pat Munro, was born on October 9, 1883, and passed away on May 3, 1942. He was a talented rugby union player for Scotland. Later in his life, he became a British politician for the Conservative Party.

Patrick Munro's Rugby Career

Playing for Clubs

Patrick Munro went to Leeds Grammar School and then to Christ Church, Oxford University. At Oxford, he studied history and was also a great athlete. He earned a special award called a "Half Blue" for high jump in 1906.

He played rugby for the Oxford University RFC team. He was a "Rugby Blue" (a top award for university sports) in 1903, 1904, and 1905. In 1905, he was even the team captain! He also played for the London Scottish FC club.

Playing for Scotland

Patrick Munro played for the Scottish national team thirteen times between 1905 and 1911. He was a key player in 1905, 1906, 1907, and 1911. He even captained the Scottish team in 1907 and 1911.

Leading Rugby

Later in his life, Patrick Munro became the President of the Scottish Rugby Union. He held this important role from 1939 to 1942.

Patrick Munro's Political Career

Working in Sudan

Before becoming a Member of Parliament, Patrick Munro worked in the Sudan Political Service starting in 1907. He was in charge of different areas there. He was the Governor of Darfur Province from 1923 to 1924. Then, he became the Governor of Khartoum Province from 1925 to 1929.

He received an award called the Order of the Nile in 1929 for his work.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

Patrick Munro became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Llandaff and Barry area. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He served as an MP from 1931 until he passed away in 1942.

Military Service and Death

During World War II, Patrick Munro joined the Home Guard. This was a group of volunteers who helped defend Britain during the war. He was a private in the Home Guard.

On May 3, 1942, he was taking part in a practice exercise at Westminster in London. The exercise was a pretend attack by enemy troops to test how well the Home Guard could defend the city. Patrick Munro was acting as a "runner," which meant he carried messages.

During the exercise, he suddenly collapsed and died. He was buried in the Cathedine (St. Michael) Churchyard in Brecknockshire. His grave is cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Family Life

Patrick Munro was the fifth son of Patrick Munro and Mary Helen Catherine Dormond. In 1911, he married Jessie Margaret Munro. She was from Bwlch in Wales.
