Patrick Springs is a community located in Patrick County, Virginia, USA. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is an area that the government counts separately for population statistics. In 2010, about 1,845 people lived in Patrick Springs.

History of Patrick Springs

The story of Patrick Springs began in 1857. That's when the area's first post office opened. It was near an old hotel and a place with natural springs. This first post office was called Spabrook Station. It changed its name to Patrick Springs post office in 1859.

The Shuff Post Office

Later, another post office opened nearby. It was located on Route 680 and was called Shuff post office. The name "Shuff" came from Reverend Jacob Shough. He was a respected Methodist circuit rider, which means he traveled around to preach. Reverend Shough was also one of the early people who helped start the Patrick Springs area.

In 1894, the people living there named their community and post office "Shuff" to honor him. Reverend Shough ran a store and the post office together. He also built the old Shough grist mill. A grist mill is a place where grain is ground into flour. This mill was one of the oldest landmarks in the community. Four generations of the Shough family ran the mill before it closed in 1918.

Naming the Community

The first Patrick Springs post office closed in 1875. It then reopened in 1907. For 32 years while it was closed, the Shuff Post Office handled all the mail for the area.

Trains from the Danville and Western Railway, nicknamed "Dick & Willie," would pass by the Shuff train station and post office. These trains carried passengers to the old Patrick Springs hotel and mineral resort. Having two different names for local addresses caused confusion. So, in 1925, steps were taken to give the whole area, including the post office and train station, the single name "Patrick Springs."
