Patrick Anthony Sweeney (born September 2, 1939 – died September 7, 2020) was an American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the government of Ohio.
Sweeney was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives for a long time, from 1967 to 1997. After that, he became a member of the Ohio Senate from 1997 to 1998.

His Time in Politics
Patrick Sweeney spent many years working in the Ohio government. He was first elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1967. He served there for 30 years, helping to make laws for the state of Ohio.
In January 1997, he was chosen to fill a vacant seat in the Ohio Senate. This happened because the previous senator, Dennis Kucinich, was elected to the U.S. Congress. Sweeney served in the Senate for about two years. In 1998, he decided not to run for election again for his Senate seat. Dan Brady took his place in 1999.
Sweeney also tried to become the mayor of Cleveland in 1981, but he did not win that election.
Education and Work
Patrick Sweeney studied a lot to prepare for his career. He earned a special degree called a master's degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government. This school is part of Harvard University and teaches people about government and public service.
After his time in politics, Sweeney worked at Cleveland State University. He helped the university with its relationships with the government. He also led his own company, PASCo Consultants, which helped people understand public policy.

Patrick Sweeney was married to Emily Margaret Sweeney. Her maiden name was Mirsky. Emily Sweeney was also involved in public service. She used to be the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. This means she was a top lawyer for the U.S. government in that area. Patrick and Emily Sweeney had one daughter named Margaret Anne.
Patrick Sweeney passed away on September 7, 2020, at the age of 81.
