Patricia Smyth (born June 26, 1957) is an American singer and songwriter. She became famous with the rock band Scandal. Later, she started a successful solo career. Her unique voice and New Wave style became well-known through music videos on channels like MTV.
Her first solo album, Never Enough, was popular and had two songs that made it into the Top 100 charts. In the early 1990s, she had a huge hit song called "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough." This was a duet with Don Henley from the band Eagles. She also co-wrote and sang "Look What Love Has Done" for the 1994 movie Junior. This song was nominated for a Grammy Award and an Academy Award.

Patty Smyth was born in New York City, New York. She grew up in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, which is also in New York City.
Patty Smyth's Music Career
After her band Scandal broke up, Patty Smyth was asked to join the famous band Van Halen. Her friend Eddie Van Halen invited her to be their new lead singer. However, she said no because she was pregnant at the time. She felt it wasn't the right moment for her to join a new band.
She also sang on the 1985 album Nervous Night by the Hooters. She was a backing singer on their song "Where Do the Children Go."
Starting Her Solo Career
Patty Smyth released her first solo album, Never Enough, in 1987. This album included her version of the song "Downtown Train." It also featured the title track "Never Enough," which she co-wrote with members of the Hooters.
In 1992, she released another solo album, simply called Patty Smyth. From this album came her biggest hit, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough." This duet with Don Henley reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song sold over 500,000 copies and earned a gold award. Her album also went gold and included another popular song, "No Mistakes."
Patty Smyth also co-wrote the song "Look What Love Has Done" in 1994. This song was part of the movie Junior. It was nominated for both a Grammy Award and an Academy Award.
She also wrote the theme song, "Wish I Were You," for the 1998 movie Armageddon.
In 2015, Patty Smyth released a Christmas album called Come On December. To help promote it, she raised money through crowdfunding for a charity called the Headstrong Project. All the money from early album sales went to this non-profit group. The album included the song "Broken," and its music video was released around Veterans Day.
Patty Smyth's Personal Life
Patty Smyth was married to musician Richard Hell from 1985 to 1986. They had one daughter together.
She later met professional tennis player John McEnroe in 1993. They had a daughter in 1995 and got married in 1997. They have another daughter together. Patty Smyth and John McEnroe live in Manhattan, New York.
