Paul Freier's Football Journey

Early Life and Youth Teams

Paul Freier was born in 1979 in a city called Bytom in Poland. When he was five years old, he started playing football for a club named ŁTS Łabędy in Poland.

At age 11, Paul and his family moved from Poland to Germany. They settled in a town called Holzen. There, he joined a local team, SV Holzen. Three years later, he moved to BSV Menden.

When he was a teenager, a big club, Borussia Dortmund, wanted him to join their youth team. But his father decided it wasn't the right time for Paul to move. In 1996, Paul joined the youth team of VfL Bochum.

First Time at VfL Bochum

In 1998, Paul Freier started playing for VfL Bochum's second team. On November 5, 1999, he played his first professional game for the main team. This was in a 2–0 win against SV Waldhof Mannheim.

Bochum was promoted to the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league. Paul made his Bundesliga debut on August 12, 2000. On April 28, 2001, he scored his first goal in the Bundesliga.

Even though Bochum was relegated that season, Paul helped them get promoted back to the Bundesliga in the 2001–02 season. He played many games and scored important goals for the team. In the 2003–04 season, VfL Bochum finished higher than their rivals, FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund.

Playing for Bayer Leverkusen

From 2004 to 2008, Paul Freier played for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. During his four seasons there, he scored 17 goals in 112 league matches. He was an important part of their team.

Back to VfL Bochum and Retirement

After his time at Bayer Leverkusen, Paul Freier returned to VfL Bochum at the end of the 2007–08 season. He signed a five-year contract with the club where he started his professional career. He played for Bochum until he retired as a player.

Life After Playing Football

Six months after he stopped playing, Paul Freier started a new role. He became an assistant coach for the Under-16 team at VfL Bochum.

On June 8, 2015, he became the assistant manager for Bochum's Under-19 team. Since then, he has continued his coaching career, working with different youth teams and now as an assistant manager for Rot-Weiss Essen.

Playing for Germany

Paul Freier also played for the German national football team. He played 19 games for his country. He was chosen for the UEFA Euro 2004 squad but had to miss it due to an injury.

He was also a backup player for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. His only goal for Germany came in June 2003, during a 4–1 win against Canada.
