Paul Freier's Football Journey
Early Life and Youth Teams
Paul Freier was born in 1979 in a city called Bytom in Poland. When he was five years old, he started playing football for a local club named ŁTS Łabędy.
At age 11, Paul and his family moved from Poland to Germany. They settled in a town called Holzen. After moving, he joined a new team, SV Holzen. Three years later, he moved to another youth club, BSV Menden.
In 1996, when Paul was 17, he joined the youth team of VfL Bochum. This was a big step towards becoming a professional player.
Playing for VfL Bochum (First Time)
In 1998, Paul Freier started playing for VfL Bochum's second team. Soon after, on November 5, 1999, he played his first professional game for the main team. This was in a match against SV Waldhof Mannheim.
With VfL Bochum, Paul helped the team get promoted to the Bundesliga. The Bundesliga is Germany's top football league. He made his debut in the Bundesliga on August 12, 2000.
On April 28, 2001, Paul scored his first goal in the Bundesliga. Even though he scored, VfL Bochum was moved down to a lower league that season. But they didn't give up! In the 2001–02 season, Paul helped Bochum get promoted back to the Bundesliga. He played in 30 games and scored seven goals that season.
Time at Bayer Leverkusen
In 2004, Paul Freier moved to another big German club, Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He played there for four seasons, until 2008. During his time at Bayer Leverkusen, he scored 17 goals in 112 league games.
Coming Back to VfL Bochum
After his time at Bayer Leverkusen, Paul Freier returned to VfL Bochum in 2008. He signed a five-year contract with the club where he started his professional career. He played for Bochum until he retired as a player in 2014.
After Playing: Becoming a Coach
After Paul Freier stopped playing football professionally, he didn't leave the sport. Six months after retiring, he became an assistant coach for the U16 (under 16) team at VfL Bochum.
On June 8, 2015, it was announced that Paul would become the assistant manager for Bochum's U19 (under 19) team. Since then, he has coached at several youth teams, helping young players develop their skills. He is currently an assistant coach for Rot-Weiss Essen.
Playing for Germany
Paul Freier also played for the German national team. He played in 19 international matches, which are called "caps."
He was chosen to be part of Germany's team for the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament, but he had to miss it because of an injury. He was also a backup player for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Paul scored his only goal for Germany in June 2003, in a game where Germany won 4–1 against Canada.
