Paul Kaba Thieba is an economist and politician from Burkina Faso. He was born on July 28, 1960. Mr. Thieba served as the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso from January 6, 2016, to January 19, 2019. President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré chose him for this important role. Before becoming Prime Minister, he worked for the Central Bank of West African States and the West African Monetary Union.
Early Life and School
Paul Kaba Thieba was born in Bobo-Dioulasso, which was then called Upper Volta, on July 28, 1960. He finished high school in Ouagadougou in June 1979.
He then went to the University of Ouagadougou. There, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1982. A year later, he completed his Master's degree.
Mr. Thieba continued his studies at the Pierre Mendès-France University. He earned a special diploma in 1984 and a doctorate degree in 1987. In 1988, he also got a diploma in Banking and Finance from the Paris Descartes University.
His Career
Paul Kaba Thieba has a lot of experience in finance. In September 1998, he started working at the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO). He was in charge of foreign exchange until July 2000.
From 2000 to 2006, he was an assistant director for financial operations. He then became the director of financial operations in January 2007. He held this job until December 2008.
Later, he became an advisor in different departments. From February 2014, he was the managing director of the Financial Stability Fund. This fund is part of the West African Monetary Union. He held this position until he became Prime Minister in January 2016.
Becoming Prime Minister
President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré chose Paul Kaba Thieba to be the Prime Minister. This happened on January 6, 2016, soon after President Kaboré took office.
One of his first big challenges was an attack in Ouagadougou on January 15, 2016. Security forces worked to help people who were trapped. Many people were safely rescued.
In February 2017, the government changed slightly. The number of ministers in Mr. Thieba's government increased from 29 to 32.
On January 19, 2019, Mr. Thieba and all his ministers resigned from their positions. President Kaboré announced this news on television. The reason for their resignation was not publicly shared.
Personal Life
Paul Kaba Thieba is a Roman Catholic. He has three children.
