Roch Marc Christian Kaboré (born on April 25, 1957) is a politician and former banker from Burkina Faso. He served as the President of Burkina Faso from 2015 until 2022.

Before becoming president, Kaboré held several important roles. He was the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso from 1994 to 1996. He also served as the President of the National Assembly of Burkina Faso (which is like a country's parliament) from 2002 to 2012.

In 2014, Kaboré started a new political group called the People's Movement for Progress party. He was elected president in November 2015. He was the first president in nearly 50 years who had no military background. In January 2022, he was removed from office by the military.

Early Life and Education

Roch Marc Christian Kaboré was born in Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso. At the time, Burkina Faso was known as Upper Volta. His father, Charles Bila Kaboré, was a government minister and a banker.

Kaboré went to primary school from 1962 to 1968. After that, he attended Collège Saint Jean-Baptiste de la Salle, a special school in Ouagadougou. He studied there from 1968 to 1975. He earned his BEPC (a general certificate) in 1972 and his baccalauréat (like an 'A' level) in 1975.

He then went to the University of Dijon in France. There, he studied economics and business. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1979 and his master's degree in 1980. While studying in France, he met his wife, Sika Bella Kaboré. They got married in 1982 and have three children.

Career Journey

Banking Career

Like his father, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré started his career in banking. He worked for the International Bank of Burkina (BIB). He quickly moved up and became the General Director of the BIB in 1984. He was only 27 years old at the time. He stayed in this important banking role until 1989.

Political Career

In September 1989, Kaboré began his political journey. He was appointed as a government minister. He also served as a special adviser to the president. Later, he became a deputy in the National Assembly.

In 1994, he was appointed as the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso. In 1996, he stepped down as Prime Minister. He then became the First Vice-President of a new ruling party, the Congress for Democracy and Progress (CDP). He also worked as a special adviser to the President.

On June 6, 2002, Kaboré was elected as the President of the National Assembly of Burkina Faso. He held this position for many years. In the May 2007 election, he was re-elected to the National Assembly. He was then chosen again to be the President of the National Assembly.

Role Time Period
Minister of Transports and Communications September 1989
Minister of State February 1992
Member of Parliament May 1992
Minister of State for Finance and Plan June 1992 to September 1993
Prime Minister March 1994
Special Advisor to the President February 1996 to June 1997
Elected Member of the National Assembly May 1997
Elected President of the National Assembly June 2002
Elected President of the CDP Party August 2003
Elected President of Burkina Faso November 2015

Leaving the CDP Party

On January 6, 2014, Kaboré and several other important members left the CDP party. They felt the party was not being run fairly. They also disagreed with plans to change the constitution. These changes would have allowed the then-President, Blaise Compaoré, to run for president again in 2015.

On January 25, 2014, Kaboré formed a new opposition party. This party was called the People's Movement for Progress (MPP).

Presidency

In July 2015, the MPP party officially chose Kaboré as their candidate for the presidential elections. The elections were held on November 29, 2015.

Kaboré won the election in the first round of voting. He received 53.5% of the votes. He was sworn in as President on December 29, 2015. On January 7, 2016, he appointed Paul Kaba Thieba as his Prime Minister. Kaboré also took on the role of Minister of Defense for a period.

He was re-elected for a second term in the November 22, 2020, general elections. He won with 57.74% of the votes.

Removal from Office

On January 24, 2022, Kaboré was removed from his position as president by the military. This event was part of a coup d'état. After this, the military announced that the parliament, government, and constitution were no longer in effect.

A group called the Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration (MPSR) shared a letter. It was a handwritten resignation letter from Kaboré. It stated that he decided to resign "in the interests of the nation." Kaboré was held at a military barracks. By February 2022, he was moved to house arrest.

The ECOWAS is a group of West African countries. They put pressure on the military to release Kaboré. In April 2022, he was released from house arrest.
