Roch Marc Christian Kaboré (born 25 April 1957) is a banker and politician from Burkina Faso, a country in West Africa. He served as the President of Burkina Faso from 2015 until 2022.

Before becoming president, Kaboré held several important roles. He was the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso from 1994 to 1996. He also served as the President of the National Assembly of Burkina Faso (which is like the country's parliament) from 2002 to 2012. He helped create a new political party called the People's Movement for Progress in 2014.

Kaboré won the presidential election in November 2015. He was the first president in nearly 50 years who had no military background. Before his political career, he worked in banking. In January 2022, he was removed from office by the military during a coup d'état.

Early Life and Education

Roch Marc Christian Kaboré was born in Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso. At the time, the country was known as Upper Volta. His father, Charles Bila Kaboré, was a government minister and a banker.

Kaboré went to primary school from 1962 to 1968. He then attended a special school in Ouagadougou. He studied economics at the University of Dijon in France. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1979 and his master's degree in 1980.

While studying in France, Kaboré met his future wife, Sika Bella Kaboré. They got married in 1982 and have three children.

Career

Banking Career

Like his father, Kaboré started his career in banking. He worked for the International Bank of Burkina (BIB). He quickly moved up and became the General Director of the BIB in 1984, when he was only 27 years old. He held this important position until 1989.

Political Career

Kaboré began his political career as a government minister. He also worked as a special adviser to the president. He became a member of the National Assembly, which is where laws are made.

In 1994, he was appointed Prime Minister. He served in this role until 1996. After that, he became a special adviser to the President.

On 6 June 2002, Kaboré was elected as the President of the National Assembly of Burkina Faso. He was re-elected to this position in 2007.

Leaving the CDP Party

On 6 January 2014, Kaboré and several other important politicians left the Congress for Democracy and Progress (CDP) party. They felt the party was not being run in a fair way. They also disagreed with plans to change the constitution. These changes would have allowed the then-President, Blaise Compaoré, to stay in power for more terms.

After leaving the CDP, Kaboré helped create a new opposition party. This new party, called the People's Movement for Progress (MPP), was founded on 25 January 2014.

Presidency

In July 2015, Kaboré was chosen as the MPP's candidate for the presidential election. The election took place on 29 November 2015.

Kaboré won the election in the first round. He received 53.5% of the votes. He was sworn in as President on 29 December 2015. As president, he appointed Paul Kaba Thieba as his Prime Minister. Kaboré also took on the role of Minister of Defense for a period.

He was re-elected for a second term in the general elections on 22 November 2020. He won with 57.74% of the vote.

Removal from Office

On 24 January 2022, Kaboré was removed from his position as president by the military. This event was a coup d'état. After the military took over, they announced that the parliament, government, and constitution were no longer in effect.

A group called the Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration (MPSR) shared a letter. In the letter, Kaboré stated he was resigning "in the interests of the nation." He was held by the military for a time. By February 2022, he was moved to house arrest.

The ECOWAS, a group of West African countries, asked the military to release Kaboré. In April 2022, he was released from house arrest.
