Paul Schrieber's Umpiring Journey
Starting in Minor League Baseball
Before reaching Major League Baseball, Paul Schrieber gained experience in different minor leagues. These are smaller baseball leagues where players and umpires develop their skills. He worked in several leagues, including:
- The Northwest League in 1990
- The California League from 1991 to 1992
- The Florida State League in 1993
- The Southern League from 1994 to 1995
Moving Up to the Major Leagues
When Paul Schrieber umpired his very first Major League game, he did something special. He left an empty seat in the stands for his mother. She had passed away from breast cancer before she could see him achieve his dream. This showed how much he cared about her.
Understanding the Strike Zone
As an umpire, one of Paul Schrieber's main jobs was to call balls and strikes. This means deciding if a pitched ball passed through the "strike zone". The strike zone is an imaginary box over home plate. It is where a batter is expected to hit the ball. According to a baseball report, Paul Schrieber was known for having one of the smaller strike zones among umpires in 2011. This means he might have called fewer pitches as strikes compared to other umpires.
Life Outside the Baseball Field
Family and Home Life
Paul Schrieber lived in Scottsdale, Arizona. He had two sons named Jack and Kevin. Baseball was a big part of his family's life. Paul was a second-generation professional umpire. This means his father was also an umpire, working in leagues as high as Class AAA.
Education and College Baseball
Paul Schrieber attended Canada Junior College. After that, he went to Portland State University. While at Portland State, he wasn't just a student; he was also a baseball player. He played as a catcher on the university's baseball team. This experience likely gave him a unique understanding of the game from a player's perspective, which helped him as an umpire.
Paul Schrieber passed away in November 2020.
