Paul Viiding (born May 22, 1904 – died June 27, 1962) was a famous Estonian poet, writer, and literary critic. He was known for his thoughtful poems and stories.
Early Life and Education
Paul Viiding was born in Valga, which is a town in Estonia. His parents were Juhan and Ann Viiding. Paul was the older of their two children. His sister, Linda, was born a few years later in 1907.
He went to the Hugo Treffner Gymnasium, which is a well-known school in Estonia. After that, he studied mathematics at the University of Tartu. He finished his degree in 1930. Even though he studied math, he decided to become a writer and poet.
The "Arbujad" Poets
In 1938, Paul Viiding became part of a special group of Estonian poets. A literary expert named Ants Oras brought them together. This small group of six poets was called Arbujad, which means "Soothsayers."
The group included Paul Viiding, Heiti Talvik, Betti Alver, Uku Masing, Bernard Kangro, Kersti Merilaas, Mart Raud, and August Sang. These poets were very important in Estonian literature and influenced many other writers.
Family Life
Paul Viiding married Linda Viiding (whose maiden name was Laarmann). Linda was a translator. They had four children together. Their daughters were Reet, Anni, and Mari Tarand. Their youngest child and only son was Juhan Viiding.
Paul Viiding also had several grandchildren who became well-known in different fields. His grandchildren include the historian Juhan Kreem, the musician Jaagup Kreem, the poet Elo Viiding, the politician Indrek Tarand, and the journalist Kaarel Tarand.
Paul Viiding passed away in Tallinn, Estonia, in 1962.
