Meet Paula Allen-Meares
Early Life and Education
Paula Allen-Meares grew up in Buffalo, New York. She went to SUNY Buffalo for her first degree. After that, she studied social work at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (UIUC). While she was working on her advanced degree, she also worked for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. This department helps children and families.
A Career in Social Work
In 1975, Paula Allen-Meares became a teacher at UIUC. By 1990, she was made the dean of the School of Social Work there. A dean is a leader of a specific part of a university.
In 1993, Allen-Meares moved to the University of Michigan. She became the dean of their School of Social Work. She also led the University Health Sciences Council. During her time at the University of Michigan, the School of Social Work's special fund grew a lot. It went from $1 million to $42.3 million.
Leading a University
In June 2008, it was announced that Paula Allen-Meares would become the chancellor of the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). A chancellor is the main leader of a university. Her term as chancellor started in January 2009.
As chancellor, she worked to try and get UIC to be the home for the Barack Obama Presidential Center. This center would be a place to learn about former President Barack Obama.
Her first five-year term as chancellor was extended. It was set to end in January 2015. However, her term was not renewed after that.
