Early Life and Education
Paula Hawkins was born on 26 August 1972. She grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe. At that time, the city was called Salisbury and was part of Rhodesia. Her father was a professor who taught economics. He was also a financial journalist.
When Paula was 17, she moved to London in 1989. She studied at Collingham College in West London. Later, she went to Keble College at the University of Oxford. There, she studied philosophy, politics, and economics.
Starting Her Career
After college, Paula Hawkins began working as a journalist. She wrote about business for The Times newspaper. She also worked for other publications as a freelance writer. This means she worked for herself and sold her articles to different places. She even wrote a book with financial advice for women.
Becoming a Novelist
Around 2009, Paula Hawkins started writing fiction. At first, she wrote romantic comedy novels. She used the pen name Amy Silver for these books. She wrote four novels under this name.
However, she wanted to try something different. She decided to write a darker and more serious story. This led to her breakthrough novel, The Girl on the Train. She spent six months writing this complex thriller. The book quickly became a bestseller around the world.
Later Works and Recognition
The Girl on the Train was so popular that it was made into a film in 2016. In November 2016, the BBC included her in their list of 100 Women. This list celebrates inspiring and influential women.
