Paula Elizabeth Yates (born April 24, 1959 – died September 17, 2000) was a British television presenter and writer. She was well-known for her work on two TV shows. These were The Tube and The Big Breakfast.

Early Life and Family

Paula Yates was born on April 24, 1959, in Colwyn Bay, Wales. Her parents were English. She grew up in a family connected to show business. Her mother, Elaine Smith, was an actress and writer.

For many years, Paula believed her father was Jess Yates. He hosted a TV show called Stars on Sunday. In 1997, a DNA test showed that her biological father was actually Hughie Green. He was a famous game show host.

Paula went to several schools, including Penrhos College. After her parents separated in 1975, she lived mostly with her mother. She also spent time studying in Malta and Mallorca.

Paula Yates' Career

Paula Yates started her career in 1979. She wrote a music column called "Natural Blonde" for Record Mirror magazine. In the 1980s, she became famous as a co-presenter. She worked with Jools Holland on the Channel 4 pop music show The Tube. She also appeared on BBC TV chat shows.

In 1982, Paula released her own version of the song "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'". She also wrote two books about being a mother. Later, she became well-known for her interviews on The Big Breakfast. Her husband, Bob Geldof, produced this show.

Her Personal Life

Paula Yates met Bob Geldof when his band, the Boomtown Rats, was starting out. They began dating in 1976. Their first daughter, Fifi, was born in 1983. Paula and Bob got married on August 31, 1986, in Las Vegas. They had two more daughters, Peaches (born 1989) and Pixie (born 1990).

In 1995, Paula left Bob Geldof. She then started a relationship with Michael Hutchence. He was the lead singer of the band INXS. Paula and Bob divorced in May 1996. On July 22, 1996, Paula gave birth to her daughter, Tiger Lily Hiraani Hutchence. Michael Hutchence died in November 1997.

In June 1998, Bob Geldof gained full care of their three daughters. After Paula's death, Bob also took care of Tiger Lily. This meant Tiger Lily could grow up with her three older half-sisters. In 2007, Bob adopted Tiger Lily. Her legal name became Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily Hutchence Geldof.

On April 7, 2014, Paula's second daughter, Peaches, passed away at age 25.

Her Legacy

On March 13, 2023, a two-part Channel 4 documentary about Paula Yates was released. It was called Paula. The documentary looked at her life and career. It showed how much media attention Paula received. The show included interviews with her friends and other people. These included Belinda Brewin, Nicky Clarke, Robbie Williams, and Vanessa Feltz.

The documentary also used old videos of Paula and interviews that had not been heard before. These interviews were done after Michael Hutchence died. Reviewers praised the documentary. Lucy Mangan from The Guardian called it "a glorious celebration". Carol Midgeley from The Times said Paula was a "fizzling force of nature". The first episode of Paula was watched by 970,000 viewers.
