The Story of Paulding's Courthouse
When Paulding County was created in 1820, a small town called Charloe was chosen as the first county seat. A county seat is the main town where the county government offices are located.
Over time, the village of Paulding grew much larger. Charloe, however, did not grow as much. Because of this, the county seat was moved to the bigger village of Paulding.
Early Courthouses in Paulding
Once Paulding became the county seat, the county's second courthouse was built. This happened in 1837 on the main square of the village. It was a simple building made of wood.
After about fifty years, this wooden courthouse was taken down. The current, more modern building was then built in its place in 1886.
What the Courthouse Looks Like
The Paulding County Courthouse was designed by the E.O. Fallis Company. Workers built it under the guidance of Rudolph Ehrhart. The building is made of brick and has a strong stone foundation. Its roof is made of asphalt.
Special Design Features
The courthouse stands two-and-a-half stories tall. It has a tall tower right in the middle. The building has entrances that look almost the same on all four of its sides.
The courthouse is 60 feet (18 m) square, meaning it's 60 feet long and 60 feet wide. The very top of its domed tower reaches 163 feet (50 m) high. The architects designed it to look similar to the Lenawee County Courthouse in Michigan.
A Historic Landmark: National Recognition
In 1974, the Paulding County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. It was recognized because its architecture was well-preserved and important across the state.
Other Historic Sites Nearby
The courthouse is one of four buildings in Paulding County on this important list. The others include a unique rural round barn, an old train station in Antwerp, and the Carnegie library also in Paulding.
