Early Life and Family

Pauline Prochazka was born in 1842. Her father was Ottokar, Baron Prochazka. He was a high-ranking officer in the Austrian Army. Her mother was Leopoldine Henrika Gersch. Pauline was born in Prague, which is now the capital of the Czech Republic.

Even though she was born in Prague, Pauline moved to Ireland when she was very young. She grew up there. Her family had important connections in Ireland. For example, her mother was the step-daughter of Baron Stuart de Decies. He lived in Dromana, County Waterford.

Founding the Water Colour Society

Pauline Prochazka loved to paint with watercolors. In 1870, she decided to create a special group for artists. She started the Water Colour Society of Ireland in Waterford. Six other women artists joined her.

At first, the group was called the Amateur Drawing Society. This means it was for people who loved to draw and paint as a hobby. Eight years later, in 1878, the group changed its name. It became known as the "Irish Fine Art Society." This new name showed that the group was for serious artists.

Artistic Achievements

Pauline Prochazka was a very skilled artist herself. She won awards for her beautiful watercolor paintings. Her talent was recognized by many.

In 1886, Pauline took on a new role. She became the manager of the Royal Irish School of Art Needlework. This school taught people how to create art using needles and thread. She led the school for twelve years, helping many students learn new skills.

Later Life and Connections

Pauline Prochazka had more family connections in Ireland. She was the niece of Sir Charles Wheeler Cuffe. This also made her related to another artist, Charlotte, Lady Wheeler-Cuffe. Charlotte was known for her illustrations.

Pauline lived in a large house called Lyrath House. It was located in County Kilkenny, Ireland. She passed away in 1930. Her death was announced in a newspaper called the Irish Times on April 24, 1930.
