In February 2016, Paulino came back to Spain. He signed a contract with Atlético Madrid for two and a half years. He was placed in their top youth team, called Juvenil A. Later that year, in July, he joined Deportivo Alavés. He started playing for their reserve team, Alavés B, which was in the Tercera División.

Paulino became a regular player for Alavés B. In September 2018, he extended his contract until 2021. During the 2018–19 season, he scored five goals in 24 games. His team was promoted to a higher league, the Segunda División B.
