Paulo Autuori de Mello (born August 25, 1956) is a Brazilian football expert. He works as a coach and a technical director. Currently, he is the technical director for Coritiba.

Early Life and Education

Paulo Autuori loved football from a young age. He played futsal, which is like indoor soccer. Sadly, he got a sickness called poliomyelitis when he was a teenager. This disease made one of his legs weak and caused him to limp. Because of this, he could not become a professional football player.

Even though he couldn't play, Paulo still wanted to be part of the football world. He decided to learn about other parts of the game. He chose to become a manager, which is like a head coach for a team.

Paulo studied Physical Education at Universidade Castelo Branco. He also took courses in Sport Administration and Soccer Coaching. This helped him prepare for his career in football.

Coaching Career Highlights

Paulo Autuori started his career helping players with their fitness. He worked for several clubs in Brazil. In 1986, he joined the staff of Vitória de Guimarães in Portugal. By 1987, he became the main manager for Nacional. He helped them get promoted to a higher league.

In 1995, Paulo returned to Botafogo in Brazil. He led the team to win the Brazilian Championship that year. This was a big achievement for him.

He then moved to Portugal to manage Benfica in 1996. After that, he coached Cruzeiro in Brazil. With Cruzeiro, he won the Copa Libertadores in 1997. This is one of the most important club tournaments in South America.

Paulo also managed the Peru national team from 2003 to 2005. Later, in 2005, he coached São Paulo. With São Paulo, he won the 2005 Copa Libertadores again. He also led them to win the FIFA Club World Cup that same year. This made him a very successful coach.

He coached teams in different countries, including Japan (like Kashima Antlers and Cerezo Osaka) and Qatar (like Al-Rayyan and the Qatar national team). He also coached in Bulgaria for Ludogorets Razgrad and in Colombia for Atlético Nacional.

Paulo Autuori has often returned to clubs he managed before, like Botafogo, Cruzeiro, and Athletico Paranaense. He has also taken on roles as a technical director, helping to guide the overall football strategy of a club. In 2024, he became the technical director for Coritiba.
