Peach Bottom is a small, unincorporated village in Fulton Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It sits on the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River. An "unincorporated village" means it's a community without its own local government, but it's part of a larger township.

The Story of Peach Bottom

The original town of Peach Bottom was actually located across the Susquehanna River in York County.

Railroads and Ferries

When the Columbia and Port Deposit Railroad was built between 1866 and 1868, a train station was placed on the Lancaster County side. This station was near the mouth of Peters Creek. From here, people could take a ferry to the original Peach Bottom town. This new spot became known as Peach Bottom Station.

The Peach Bottom Railway had stations on both sides of the river. There were plans to build a bridge to connect them, but it was never finished. The railway on the east side later became the Lancaster, Oxford and Southern Railroad. The line on the west side became the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad.

The Conowingo Dam and a New Location

Between 1926 and 1928, the Conowingo Dam was built on the Susquehanna River. Because of the dam, the Columbia and Port Deposit railroad tracks had to be moved higher up the hillside. Both the original Peach Bottom town and Peach Bottom Station were covered by water.

The village you see today was then built a short distance southeast of where Peach Bottom Station used to be.

Post Office Information

The post office for the Peach Bottom area has the ZIP code 17563. However, this post office is not actually in the village itself. It is located on Pennsylvania Route 272, just north of Wakefield.

The Nuclear Generating Station

The Peach Bottom Nuclear Generating Station is located across the river from the current village. It stands on the site where the original Peach Bottom town once was. This station is a power plant that uses nuclear energy to create electricity.

Scientists and experts sometimes study the station's impact on the environment. For example, one study from 1975 looked at how the station affected the fish in the Susquehanna River.
