Understanding the Ranks and Terms
When you read about armies, you'll see many special words and abbreviations. Here's what some of them mean for the Confederate army:
Military Ranks
- Gen = General: This was the highest rank.
- LTG = Lieutenant General: A very high-ranking officer, usually in charge of a corps.
- MG = Major General: An officer in charge of a division.
- BG = Brigadier General: An officer in charge of a brigade.
- Col = Colonel: An officer who typically led a regiment.
- Ltc = Lieutenant Colonel: The second-in-command of a regiment.
- Maj = Major: An officer who might lead a battalion or be a staff officer.
- Cpt = Captain: An officer who usually led a company.
- Lt = Lieutenant: A junior officer.
Other Important Terms
- (w) = Wounded: The soldier was hurt during the fight.
- (mw) = Mortally wounded: The soldier was hurt so badly they later died.
- (k) = Killed: The soldier died during the battle.
- (c) = Captured: The soldier was taken prisoner by the enemy.
The Confederate Army of Tennessee
The main Confederate army fighting at Peachtree Creek was the Army of Tennessee. It was led by Gen John B. Hood.
Stewart's Corps
This large group of soldiers was led by LTG Alexander P. Stewart. They also had a special escort unit called the Orleans Light Horse, led by Captain Leeds Greenleaf.
