Pearl Binder (born June 28, 1904 – died January 25, 1990) was a very talented British artist and writer. She was known for many things, including her illustrations, stained-glass art, and sculptures. She also loved and supported the famous Pearly Kings and Queens of London.

Pearl Binder was a fascinating person who loved the East End of London her whole life. She moved there in the 1920s. Later, in 1974, she became Lady Elwyn-Jones. This happened when her husband, Elwyn Jones, who was a politician and lawyer, became a very important person called the Lord Chancellor.

Early Life

Pearl Binder, sometimes called "Polly," was born in Salford, England. Her father, Jacob Binderevski, was a tailor who moved to Britain in 1890 and became a British citizen.

Her Creative Career

After the First World War, Pearl Binder moved to London. She studied art at the Central School of Art and Design. During this time, she drew many scenes of daily life in London. She turned these drawings into special prints called lithographs.

She even created pictures for a book called "The Real East End" by Thomas Burke. Her drawings showed a close-up look at what life was like in London back then. In 1933, Pearl Binder helped start a group called the Artists' International Association.

In 1937, Pearl Binder was part of the very first television shows for children. That same year, she also helped present a show called Clothes-Line. This live show was about the history of fashion. It was one of the first TV shows ever about fashion! Pearl Binder was likely the first pregnant woman to appear on television.

Pearl Binder traveled a lot during her life, visiting places like Russia and China. She also designed a musical and costumes for a theater group. She wrote stories for children and designed a special mug and plate for Wedgwood with a Pearly King design. She even created beautiful stained-glass windows for the House of Lords.

Family Life

In 1937, Pearl Binder married Elwyn Jones. They had three children:

  • Lou Taylor, who became a fashion historian.
  • Dan Jones, an artist and activist.
  • Josephine Gladstone, who wrote children's books that Pearl illustrated.

After Pearl passed away, her son-in-law remembered her as a person who cared deeply about others, especially women. She was a strong supporter of women's rights. She always kept her own name, Pearl Binder, next to her husband's name on the sign outside their home.

Later Years

Pearl Binder passed away in Brighton on January 25, 1990, when she was 86 years old. This was just seven weeks after her husband had passed away.
