Pearl Mackie, born on May 29, 1987, is an actress from Britain. She is famous for her role as Bill Potts in the TV show Doctor Who. Pearl also studied acting at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Her first big TV part was in 2014, playing Anne-Marie Frasier in the show Doctors.

Pearl Mackie's Early Life and Education
Pearl grew up in Brixton, a part of south London. Her family background includes West Indian and English roots. Her grandfather was Philip Mackie, a well-known writer. She studied Drama at the University of Bristol. Pearl can speak English, French, and Spanish. While studying, she joined many acting workshops and plays outside of her regular classes.
In 2010, she finished her studies at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. That same year, she was nominated for a special award, the BBC Carleton Hobbs Award. This was for her excellent acting in the school play Noughts & Crosses.
Pearl Mackie's Acting Career
Pearl's first movie role was in 2013. She played a front-of-house girl in the music comedy Svengali. In 2014, Pearl played Anne-Marie Frasier in the TV show Doctors. She also played Mia, a young computer genius, in Crystal Springs at the Park Theatre in London. She appeared in the play Obama-ology at the Finborough theatre. In this play, she played Cece and Caits, two young women finding their voices.
In 2015, Pearl performed in a play called The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. This play was shown in London's West End by the National Theatre. That same year, Pearl was in a short film called Date Aid. This film was a funny public service announcement. Pearl has also taught acting to children and young people through a company called Troupers.
Becoming a Doctor Who Companion
On April 23, 2016, it was announced that Pearl Mackie would join Doctor Who. She would play Bill Potts, the companion to The Doctor. In March 2017, it was also shared that Bill would be the first openly gay main companion in the show.
After filming for Series 10 of Doctor Who finished, Pearl joined a play. She played Lulu in Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party. This play opened in January 2018 at London's Harold Pinter Theatre. She acted alongside Stephen Mangan, Toby Jones, and Zoë Wanamaker.
In 2020, she was a guest star in the TV show Friday Night Dinner. She played a character named Lucy 1.
