Pebworth is a small community located in Owsley County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it does not have its own local government, like a city or town would. The post office in Pebworth closed its doors in April 1992.
The History of Pebworth
Pebworth's story is closely tied to its post office. This post office was very important for people living in the area to send and receive mail.
The First Post Office
The Pebworth post office first opened on September 13, 1887. It was located in southern Lee County at that time. The very first person in charge of the post office, called the postmaster, was John W. Handy. He ran the post office right out of his own house.
Changes in Leadership and Location
Over the years, the postmaster changed a few times.
- On July 21, 1895, John C. Smallwood took over as postmaster.
- Later that same year, on October 29, 1895, Stephen H. Handy became the new postmaster. Stephen Handy was actually the father of the first postmaster, John W. Handy!
Stephen Handy lived a few miles south of the original location, in Owsley County. Because of this, the post office was moved to Owsley County on November 14, 1895. This is how Pebworth became part of Owsley County.
