Pecho Creek facts for kids
Pecho Creek is a small stream located in San Luis Obispo County, California. It was once known by its Spanish names, Arroyo Del Pecho or Cañada del Pecho. The name "Pecho" means "breast" in Spanish. This name comes from a unique rock formation near the coast, west of where the creek meets the ocean. This rock is shaped like a breast and is called Pecho Rock.
Pecho Creek begins in the Irish Hills area. Its exact starting point is at coordinates 35°13′16″N 120°46′19″W. This is about 1.2 miles (1.9 km) east-southeast of a place called Saddle Peak. The creek starts at a high elevation of about 1,360 feet (449 meters). From there, it flows south-southwest until it reaches the Pacific Ocean. The mouth of the creek is about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) west-northwest of San Luis Hill, right at sea level.
A Look Back: Pecho Creek's History
Pecho Creek played an important role in the history of land ownership in California. It was once part of the eastern edge of a large piece of land called the Rancho Pecho y Islay. Later, in 1845, this land was combined with another ranch, the Rancho Cañada de los Osos. When these two ranches joined, Pecho Creek became part of the new, larger property. It also formed part of the western boundary for another ranch known as the Rancho San Miguelito.
