Pedrafita do Cebreiro is a small town in the Lugo province of Galicia, Spain. It is located in the beautiful area called Os Ancares.

This town is very important because it's where the famous French Way of the Way of St. James enters Galicia from the province of León. Many pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela pass through here. In the village of O Cebreiro, you can see special old houses called pallozas. One of these houses is now a small museum that shows how people used to live. There's also a church called the Royal St. Mary's Church, which was built on the remains of a very old church.

The history of Pedrafita do Cebreiro is closely linked to its location. It sits on an important mountain pass, making it a key entry point into northern Galicia.

Ancient Times and Roman Roads

The old palloza houses in O Cebreiro show that people lived here even before the Romans. Some of these unique homes have been fixed up. One is now a museum, and another is a place for pilgrims to rest.

A long time ago, a Roman road passed through Pedrafita. This road connected Astorga to Triacastela, deep inside ancient Galicia. Later, this Roman road became a path for medieval travelers and pilgrims on the Way of St. James.

The Miracle of the Holy Grail

The area became even more important for religious reasons because of a famous story. A miracle, known as the miracle of the Holy Grail, is said to have happened in O Cebreiro. Because of this, it became a must-see stop for pilgrims.

In 1486, the Catholic Monarchs, who were the King and Queen of Spain, visited O Cebreiro while on their own pilgrimage. They gave a special shrine to the monastery there to hold the relics from the miracle. The old chalice from the Romanesque monastery even appears on the coat of arms of Galicia today!

Wars and Modern Roads

The road through Pedrafita was also very important during the Spanish War of Independence in the early 1800s. Its location between León and Galicia made it a key strategic spot. In 1809, British soldiers, led by General John Moore, used this road during their retreat. Many soldiers died because of the harsh winter weather. During this war, the valuable relics of O Cebreiro were hidden for safety, but many monastery documents were lost.

From the 1800s onwards, Pedrafita do Cebreiro continued to be a main route. It became the path for the first modern highway connecting Galicia and the central plateau of Spain. In the 1900s, it even became part of the first motorway, which now goes through two tunnels in the mountain pass.

Population Changes

Over the years, the number of people living in Pedrafita do Cebreiro has changed. For example, in 1910, there were almost 5,000 people living here. By 2010, the population had decreased to about 1,200 people. This shows how populations can shift over time.
